Expecting a baby is an exciting time for parents-to-be, and one of the highlights of this journey is the gender reveal party. While you want this celebration to be fun and memorable, safety should always be a top priority for everyone involved. Check out our five essential tips for planning a safe yet unforgettable gender reveal party that you and your guests will cherish for years to come.

Choose a safe and creative reveal method

When it comes to the big reveal, think safety. Seriously, there are too many examples of gender reveals gone wrong. Please avoid using dangerous methods like fireworks or explosives, which can cause accidents, injuries, and even wildfires. Instead, opt for safer and more creative alternatives that still create a sense of excitement and wonder. Some of our favorite options are:

Confetti cannons

Fill a confetti cannon with pink or blue biodegradable confetti and let it burst to reveal the gender of your baby.

Balloon pop

Place pink or blue confetti or small balloons inside a large, opaque balloon, and pop it in front of your guests for a colorful reveal. Here’s a set you can get on Amazon.

Cake reveal

Have a baker create a cake with pink or blue layers hidden inside. When you cut into the cake, the gender will be revealed.

Pick the perfect location and have a backup plan

Selecting the right venue for your gender reveal party is crucial for ensuring both safety and comfort. Make sure the location has enough space to accommodate your guests comfortably. If you're planning an outdoor event, be mindful of weather conditions and have a backup plan in case of rain or extreme temperatures.

For some reveal methods - you need space!

For any reveal methods that require open space, such as confetti cannons, ensure there is ample room for guests to maintain a safe distance. If you're hosting the party at home, make sure to clear away any fragile items or potential hazards before the big day.

Cater to allergies and dietary restrictions

To create a safe and inclusive environment for all your guests, consider any allergies or dietary restrictions they may have when planning your menu. Clearly label food items and offer alternative options like gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan treats. This thoughtful gesture will show your guests that you care about their well-being and make them feel more comfortable attending your party.

Additionally, if you're using food coloring for the big reveal (in a cake for instance), ensure it is safe, non-toxic, and allergen-free. When in doubt, consult with a professional baker or a trusted expert for guidance.

Plan engaging games and activities

To keep your guests entertained, plan a few gender reveal party games and activities in line with your theme. Some of our favorites are:

Old Wives' Tales Quiz

Create a quiz based on old wives' tales about predicting a baby's gender. Have guests guess whether you're having a boy or a girl based on the tales. Some silly ones are:

  • Foot temperature - cold feet equals a boy!
  • Wide and round belly (girl) vs. pointed belly (boy)
  • Carrying high (girl) vs. carrying low (girl)
  • Severe morning sickness? Girl!
  • Craving sweet foods (girl) vs. salty or savory cravings (boy)

Baby Voting Station

Set up a station where guests can suggest baby names for your little one, guess the gender and put up stickers to tally up their votes.

Villie’s Gender Reveal Game

Get friends and family to place monetary bets on guessing the baby’s gender with this novel interactive game. Winner gets a prize and the rest of the funds go to the expecting parents. This game is a hit especially for the competitive ones in the group. You can allow guests to ask the expecting mother 3 questions to help them place their bets.

Don’t forget about the environment

Small switches can make a big difference when it comes to the environment. Here are some of our favorites that are easy but make an impact.

  • Ditch the plastic utensils for your granny’s silverware
  • Try out gender reveal smoke cannons
  • Swap glitter for paper confetti
  • Send out digital invitations
  • Choose decor that could be reused for another party
  • Serve tap water with ice  in pretty pitchers (with lemon!) instead of bottled water
  • Set up a recycling bin next to the trash

Don't forget to have fun!

Enjoy your big reveal. We can't wait to hear about it. Do you want to be featured and/or have tips to share with other Villie families? Tag us on Instagram or Tiktok.
